footprints in sand — Nena Black

“Even the best camera will not capture what the eye cannot see.”

— Nena Black

I learned this lesson at a very young age. My father was a self-taught photographer. He even built his own pinhole cameras, and as he could not afford expensive equipment, much of his was bought used, even broken, which he refurbished himself. This was, of course, before digital, so he shot in analog and mostly black & white. When he shot in color, it was usually to capture family moments or the vivid rainbow of nature. He taught me a lot about self-reliance and resourcefulness. He also taught me about ‘seeing’ the world and capturing what I see. My passion for the craft began there, as his student and protégé.

My photographic ‘eye’ as well as my love of photography are rooted in curiosity, imagination, and authenticity. These are the fulcrums of my aesthetic and artistic sensibilities as a photographer. Whether human or inanimate, urban landscape or nature, commercial or artistic, I approach each photographic subject with an intimate extrospection.

I have an eclectic portfolio. I shoot digital in both color and black & white. All images here on this site are my own (unless otherwise noted) and may be purchased as prints upon request. I am also for hire for photography services and commissioned work. My styles include:
