palm noir — Nena Black

“It’s not the camera…it’s the eye.”

Sometimes, a ‘perfect’ shot is less a factor of experience, setup, nor even equipment, but is simply there, waiting to be captured — one need only ‘see’ it. I was walking on the promenade in the main town on Catalina Island, just as the sun was setting. The fog was so thick that day, one could scarcely see fifty feet ahead. I happened to look up and see this visually arresting trio, perfectly aligned in the sky. The combination of late afternoon light, obscure sunset, dense fog, and exotic palm trees created an atmosphere of pure mystery. This is a dream capture, but all I had with me was my camera phone. I used a b&w filter, and the result was something out of 50s film noir…perhaps a mirky murder mystery set in Morocco.

    1. I will try to email you this weekend, Mickey. Or, maybe make a tine to call you so I have a better idea (this week is a bit busy for me). Let’s see if I can help.
