Forgoing broader complexities of the craft, photography is largely part technical skill, part ideal lighting, part eye, and part serendipity. The ‘discovery’ factor in that latter element is much where the magic occurs. I happened upon this heart-shaped cactus while hiking on a cliff overlooking a beach cove. The cove is located on an island known for its desert climate, hence the presence of cacti. For me, this kind of find is the photographic equivalent of a surprise birthday party. Fortunately, the weather was clear and the sun was positioned high in the sky, perfectly illuminating this little beauty. For me, the gift of seeing heart shapes in nature has poetic significance—nature’s mirroring of our own heart nature. The prickles of this cactus remind me of the sacredness of our human heart space…not to be mistreated, taken for granted, nor handled without care. In photographic terms, such a discovery is quite sacred as well.
